Nintendo vs. Sega
The 16-Bit generation of gaming is regarded to some as the best fight between consoles we've seen. In this battle we have Nintendo, an established company, and a veteran arcade-game-making company in Sega. Many people argue over which company actually won the war; one could say Sega won because the Genesis was released long before Nintendo released its Super Nintendo. It was only until the NES's sales began to drop that Nintendo countered with a 16-bit console to rival Sega. However, some say the Nintendo still won because its machine was statistically superior, its "hit:miss" ratio was better, and it released a huge amount of games in the little time it was around. These arguments aren't the only factors in the great battle, though. A big problem arrose when Sega published its "Sega does what Nintendon't ", and "The others just don't stack up" advertising campaigns. Nintendo, not to be upstaged, released some of its own propaganda. This sparked an ever-going balance between the two companies, which left the games to be the deciding factor (something Nintendo wanted to happen).Nintendo has always felt that it would just make the games and let consumers decide for themselves, which is exactly what happened, for better or for worse. You see, as Nintendo had so much success with its infamous sequels (Super Mario Brothers 2,3,RPG,World,All Stars) and not changing its forumla it began to be left behind. Yes, Nintendo churned out an unbelievable 28 Platinum (1 Million+ sold) games from the release of the NES to the end of the Super Nintendo, but things do change and unfortunately Nintendo didn't. |
